Volunteers for Youth has three programs to serve youth in Orange County. The Governors One-on-One Mentoring Program matches youth with positive, adult role models to develop relationships built on activities of shared interest such as hiking, basketball, cooking or reading. The Juvenile Community Services and Restitution Program works with young people who have been court ordered to complete community service hours in order to pay back the community for inappropriate behavior. Young people are placed in work sites throughout Orange County where volunteer supervisors monitor and evaluate their work. The Teen Court program is an alternative court program for middle and high school students. First time offenders are tried and sentenced by a jury of their peers. Fellow students take the roles or prosecutor, defense attorney, clerk, bailiff, and juror to conduct these proceedings. Teen Court is a cost effective diversion to the traditional methods of juvenile justice and is instrumental in keeping youth involved in the community and out of trouble.
